For the second straight year, NSU joined fellow leading educational institutions and technology companies in South Florida at the eMerge Americas Conference in Miami Beach. Held April 18 and 19, 2016, the conference brought together 13,000 people with a focus on enhancing South Florida’s role as a center of technology and innovation in the global community. Keynote speakers included retired Gen. Colin Powell, Armando “Pitbull” Perez, and notable futurist Ray Kurzweil.
Jaqueline A. Travisano, NSU’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, joined eMerge founder and entrepreneur Manny Medina and other notable leaders to ring the NASDAQ closing bell on April 18.
NSU’s booth highlighted areas of the university, including a technology display by partner Polycom that is used for distance learning, demonstrations of tamper-proof drug technology developed by researchers in NSU’s College of Pharmacy, and 360 degree virtual campus tours.
NSU also hosted featured presentations by Johannes W. Vieweg, M.D., founding dean of NSU’s College of Allopathic Medicine; H. Thomas Temple, M.D., professor and senior vice president of translational research and economic development; and Derek Burkholder, Ph.D., research scientist, NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, Guy Harvey Research Institute and Save Our Seas Shark Center.
To enhance the focus on how NSU helps its students realize their potential, the university’s booth played videos showing success stories of students and alumni throughout the globe, along with videos highlighting key researchers and projects at the university.
NSU also sponsored undergraduate and graduate students to attend the conference, along with approximately 60 underserved middle school students interested in computer sciences through the Crockett Foundation.
