The first Nova Southeastern University chapter of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society was recently inducted by the NSU Division of Student Affairs’ Office of First Year and Transitional Programs. The Delta Iota chapter has 144 members, 42 of which attended the Induction Ceremony with family and friends. The induction and reception were held at NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga Sales Institute on April 12, 2013.
The Tau Sigma National Honor Society is specifically for transfer students. In order to be invited, transfer students must be enrolled full time and achieve at least a 3.5 GPA after their first semester as an NSU student. This society was established on campus to provide resources and support for the specific needs of transfer students.
Eric Ackerman, Ph.D., dean and associate professor at NSU’s Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences, delivered the keynote speech. He inspired the members to give back to their community through service and innovation. Following Dean Ackerman, the executive board was appointed to their positions by the chapter’s advisor, Dan Sullivan, Ed.D. The chapter’s president, Mariangel Prieto; vice president, Joseph Deek; and secretary, Rebeca Thurber presented the history of the honor society and a description of its symbols. Patricia Beavan, the chapter’s co-advisor, inducted each individual student by presenting them with their certificate.
The society will extend invitations to eligible students for the next chapter in February 2014. Sullivan will continue to advise the chapter, which provides support for current and incoming transfer students.
