CPS Students Prepare for Trip to Africa to Help Orphans

In Sub-Saharan Africa a child is orphaned every 14 seconds.  As a direct result of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, there are more than 15,000,000 orphans living there. In the small Southern African kingdom of Swaziland, AIDS infects more than one in four people, making it the country with the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the world.

As a consequence of the devastatingly high rate of HIV/AIDS in Swaziland, an increasing number of orphans and vulnerable children are left with the responsibility of running their household. Concerned with whether or not they will eat, and tired from their long walks to find water, children of child headed households are forced into the parenting role, loosing their childhood and the hope for a future worth living.

Twelve students from NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies have made a commitment to get involved and travel to Swaziland June 11- June 25, to provide services to such children and offer education to community partners. These students NEED your help! Donations in the form of the following items are requested as well as monetary contributions. SOHO (Saving Orphans through Healthcare Outreach) is a non-profit organization 501 © (3), and all donations are tax deductible.

Donation Items: Children’s Clothing and Shoes (age 0-8), Children’s Toys, School Supplies, First Aid Supplies
