As part of the Distinguished Speakers Series, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host two consecutive days of unique performing and visual arts events at NSU featuring Guillermo Gómez-Peña.
Gómez-Peña is a performance artist, activist, writer, and educator, as well as a MacArthur Fellow and an American Book Award winner. His performance work and eight books have contributed to debates on cultural diversity, border culture, and U.S.-Mexico relations. A Mexican native, Gómez-Peña currently serves as director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra.
On Wednesday, Sept. 21, the performance artist will present an audio-visual lecture titled Multiple Journeys: The Life and Work of Gómez-Peña. Using text and historical photographs to chronicle his life’s work, Gómez-Peña will discuss the evolution of his field and the main political and social events of the times. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m., in the Performance Theatre of the college’s Performing and Visual Arts Wing in the Don Taft University Center.
The following night, Thursday, Sept. 22, Gómez-Peña returns to NSU for Strange Democracy: Border Wars. According to the artist, this performance “denounces anti-immigration hysteria and assaults the demonized construction of the U.S.-Mexican border.” The event begins at 7:30 p.m., in the Performance Theatre of the college’s Performing and Visual Arts Wing in the Don Taft University Center.
Admission to both events is free. Tickets are required and are limited to two per person. An NSU ID is required to obtain tickets. On Monday, Sept. 12, tickets will become available to Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences students, faculty, and staff. On Monday, Sept. 19, tickets will become available to all NSU students, faculty, and staff. Tickets can be picked up at the college’s Office of the Dean on NSU’s main campus in the Mailman Hollywood Building, second floor.
