Russell Abratt, Ph.D., and professor at NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, encouraged students attending the evening section of his Managerial Marketing class to participate in a project to develop a marketing plan and strategy for the City of Sunrise this past Spring.
The objective was to attract businesses to set up operations in the city. The class was divided into six teams competing prizes ranging from $2000 (first prize), $1200 (second prize), to $600 (third prize). The prizes were sponsored by Sawgrass Mills Mall.
Each team worked on their respective projects for nine weeks and made a 15 minute presentation in front of three judges at the end of the course. They were the City of Sunrise Manager Alan Cohen, City of Sunrise Communications Director Christine Pfeffer, and Sawgrass Mills Mall Regional Director of Marketing Joellyn Fellmeth. Also in attendance during the presentations were several city commissioners and City of Sunrise Director of Economic Development Lou Sandora.
The City of Sunrise executives were impressed enough with the presentations that they have indicated a willingness to incorporate several of the strategies into their overall strategic plans. The City of Sunrise has also expressed a desire to continue their relationship with the NSU Huizenga Business School.
