Student Tutors Honored at Annual Recognition Ceremony

The Office of Academic Services, within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, honored the invaluable work of its professional and peer tutors at the office’s annual Tutor Recognition Ceremony on Apr. 18.

In celebration of those who help NSU undergraduate students succeed in their studies each day, the Office of Academic Services (OAS), within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, hosted its fifth annual Tutor Recognition Ceremony on Apr. 18. The event recognizes the invaluable work of the office’s peer and professional tutors.

The following math and science tutors received recognition: Ana Edwards, Faria Fatmi, Michele Fernandez, Marissa Hoffman, Max Itkin, Amelia Jackson, Lauren Llorente, Jessica Millar, Du Nguyen, Trinidad Samaniego, Dorothy Simmons, and Isabelle Verret.

OAS also recognized its writing tutors: Mindy Blum, Jenny Brain, Marissa Cohen, Christine Dominguez, Johnathan Faubert, Stephanie Fleming, Samantha Koeppel, Rita Martinez-Puccio, Ed Reardon, Karen Ryan, Sasha Strelitz, and Emma Trelles.

Student tutors who are graduating from NSU this year also received special recognition at the event. They are Melanie Campbell, who spoke at the ceremony, as well as Joseph Costa, Maliha Fatima, and Lacrima Nemulescu.

On hand at the event to honor the tutors’ contributions were faculty and members of college leadership. This included Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences; Saul Sztam, Ed.D., assistant dean of college student affairs; and Matthew He, Ph.D., director of the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology.

Also attending the ceremony were several members of the OAS staff, including Lisa Walther-Austin, director; Gail Levine, assistant director; Patricia Krauss, coordinator of testing; Robert Miyares, coordinator of off-campus tutoring; and Cortney Palmacci, coordinator of main-campus tutoring.

Located in the Parker Building, suite 100, the Office of Academic Services provides a variety of amenities to NSU’s undergraduate students. In addition to tutoring sessions, these services and resources include individualized academic support, study areas and rooms for reserve, math DVDs for checkout, solution manuals, APA and MLA guidebooks, grammar and study skills handouts, EyeQ speed-reading software, and testing for credit.
