The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences held its fall 2010 Honors Banquet on Sep. 23, recognizing students in NSU’s Undergraduate Honors Program for their academic achievements and excellence.
To begin the ceremony, Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the college, and Ray Ferrero, Jr., J.D., chancellor of Nova Southeastern University, welcomed new and returning Honors students and acknowledged the Honors faculty’s service and leadership. Also in attendance were George Hanbury, II, Ph.D., president of NSU, and Frank De Piano, Ph.D., university provost and vice president for academic affairs.
The evening continued with a dinner, during which students and faculty members worked together to construct an Honors “monument” from a limited number of materials, including paper, tape, a marker, scissors, and paper clips. Each creation was designed to showcase participating individuals while highlighting their groups’ Honors ideals—an entertaining, yet challenging, activity. Each group then presented its monument and voted for a winner.
Following dinner, Rosenblum introduced this year’s Honors Advocates: Inna Dumova, Kirstyn Hoffman, Marissa Hoffman, William Kotkin, Lauren Llorente, Evie Macaisa, Andrew Mikhail, and Siobhan Ming.
The event culminated with Rosenblum presenting this year’s First-Week Scholarships. Scholarship applicants are required to compose an essay explaining how they will benefit from, and contribute to, the Honors program. They are also required to submit two letters of recommendation from faculty members, whom they have met and connected with already in their short time at NSU.
This year’s recipients include Farah Alli, Noemi Bermudez, Daniel Brookins, Lona Chen, Marissa Hoffman, Janice James, Beata Jeziorska, Lauren Llorente, Dona Rose, and Florencia Schwartz.
More than 250 talented and motivated students now participate in the NSU Undergraduate Honors Program. Administered through the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Office of the Dean, this interdisciplinary program for high-achieving undergraduate students provides a rich four-year experience through directed curricula and co-curricular activities in and out of the classroom.
The program is designed to challenge participants through intimate, intensive Hhonors courses and independent research pursued in collaboration with faculty mentors. Outside the classroom, networking opportunities connect Honors students to an ambitious community that pushes them to hone their analytical and critical thinking skills.
