An article written by Toran Hansen, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) in NSU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) has been recognized as one of the most influential articles in the special edition of the Conflict Resolution Quarterly (CRQ). His article is entitled, “Critical Conflict Resolution Theory and Practice.”
According to Honggang Yang, Ph.D., dean of SHSS: “Professor Hansen’s illuminating article is an essential reminder for the entire field of conflict resolution and for any other helping professions in the political economic contexts embedded in social inequalities.”
As Hansen states in his article (p. 423,) “Conflict resolution practice and theory emerging from a critical framework point the profession of conflict resolution in a new and important direction: resisting an unjust status quo. Conflict resolution can be enriched with more attention placed on power analyses, power balancing, and the attainment of sustainable resolutions that resist social injustice and oppression.”
Hansen’s research and teaching interests include restorative justice, social movements, social networks, and social capital.
