Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Navid Madani is a Senior Scientist at the Harvard School of Medicine, with a hospital appointment at DanaFarber Cancer Institute. Dr. Madani’s research emphasis is HIV/AIDS, drug discovery and microbicide development. The goal of Dr. Madani and her team is to halt the global HIV epidemic through a two-pronged approach: biochemically and educationally. Her studies have led to the biochemical characterization of two class of small-molecules that bind HIV-1 gp120 and inhibit HIV-1 entry. Currently, she is the principal investigator on a study, which is optimizing the application of a CD4-mimetic small-molecule inhibitor of HIV-1 infection as topical microbicides. In addition to her scientific research, Dr. Madani regularly travels to the Middle East and North Africa, to present seminars at various universities, and to lead workshops with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS and public health. Her educational seminars aim to advance the understanding of sexual and reproductive health. She is the Founding Director of Science Health Education (SHE) Center in the Middle East and North Africa. Her goal is to facilitate interdisciplinary research and dialogue on emerging infectious diseases in the region. She is also the proud mother of two spirited boys.
