The Department of Humanities and Politics, Spanish Club, and Fin Films are pleased to present our international cinema pick of the year for NSU’s Annual Film Series: The Reel! The Reel offers NSU’s community curated film screenings for free with food and friends. We get together, watch films, snack, and share thoughts and experiences exploring issues of culture through film.
Join us next week for Official Competition (January 26, 7:00pm-9:30pm, Alvin Sherman Library Lawn). As our international selection of the year, The Reel will screen this film in the original Spanish with English captions. We will also be joined for discussion by Associate Professor of Spanish, Dr. Yvette Fuentes! Dr. Fuentes is also our coordinator for NSU’s Modern Languages and International Studies programs.
Official Competition is a Spanish comedy that follows the riotous performances of an eccentric and notorious film director, Lola Cuevas (played by Penélope Cruz) as she drives her two egomaniacal lead actors (played by Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martínez) through a series of increasingly arbitrary and absurd acting exercises. Wickedly playful, Cruz, Banderas, and Martínez satirize their own vanities and the pretensions of wealth and art. This film has been nominated for this year’s Best Comedy in the 10th Feroz Awards and Best Cinematography in the 37th Goya Awards.
All are welcome! We look forward to seeing you there!
