National Initiative Coincides with War’s Centennial Anniversary
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will host the program series and exhibition World War I and America March 21 through May 2. The panel exhibit and a plethora of other WWI movies, reenactors and programming will be held in NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library located at 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd. at NSU’s Fort Lauderdale-Davie campus.
World War I and America is a two-year national initiative of the Library of America presented in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, and other organizations, with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The NSU Alvin Sherman Library is one of only 50 libraries across the country that will also host a companion traveling exhibition of documents, images, and interpretive texts prepared by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
Organized to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the nation’s entry into the war in 1917, it is hoped that the project will bring members of the veteran community together with the general public in libraries and museums around the country to explore the impact of the First World War by reading, discussing, and sharing insights into the writings of Americans who experienced it first-hand.
NSU will also host a free ongoing discussion group developed by the Library of America to explore excerpts of essays, speeches, books, poems and letters about World War I. Led by Timothy Dixon, J.D., NSU Associate Professor, in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History and Political Science, seven topics will be covered during the exhibit period. Visit lib.nova.edu/WWI for events, dates, times and information on World War I in America.
The project website, WWIAmerica.org, features multimedia resources for public programming and individual discovery, including video commentary by scholars and veteran-writers, a free downloadable reader of historical texts, an interactive timeline of events, and an online exhibition of documents and images from World War I.
