How does the academic theme of “Truth and Power” help you understand your role as a student at NSU? Undergraduate students had the opportunity to answer that question as part of the first annual Farquhar Writing Contest, hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences during the winter 2012 semester.

The contest offered NSU students an outlet for personal reflection in the form of short essays. Entries were judged by college faculty members, as well as students and alumni from the college’s M.A. in Writing program. The college hosted a ceremony and reception on Apr.30 to recognize three students who earned awards for their writing.

First Place | Kareen Barakat, English major

Second Place | Biana Modilevsky, biology major

Third Place | Jean Chavanes, business administration major

During the ceremony, the students spoke about the topic of truth and power, discussed their essays, and read excerpts from their submissions. Each student also received a certificate and a Visa gift card as awards for their work. The winners then joined friends, family members, faculty, and fellow students for a celebratory reception.

The first annual Farquhar Writing Contest was co-organized by Star Medzerian, Ph.D., and Kelly Concannon Mannise, Ph.D., assistant professors in the college.
