The NSU Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD) hosted a Pinning Ceremony on August 11, 2018, to emphasize the importance of humanism in medicine in alignment with NSU’s Core Value of Integrity. Held in the university’s Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, the event symbolically culminated the professional immersion period for the college’s charter class of 53 Doctor of Medicine students, who were surrounded by their loved ones as well as members of NSU leadership and college faculty members.
Sandra O. Gold, Ed.D., served as the distinguished speaker. Dr. Gold is the co-founder and immediate past president of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the tradition of the caring physician and advancing humanism in medicine through innovative medical education efforts.
Each student had an opportunity to place a Gold Foundation lapel pin on the white coat of a fellow student as a reminder of the importance of medical ethics. In addition, they each received a personalized stethoscope from Johannes Vieweg, M.D., dean, and the college’s namesake, Dr. Kiran C. Patel – the only person in the nation to have two medical schools named in his honor.
Students recited an oath they developed during their first two weeks of medical school in which they pledged to practice medicine in an ethical and compassionate manner.
NSU President Dr. George Hanbury attended the celebration. Speakers from NSU MD included, Dr. Vieweg; Paula S. Wales, Ed.D., executive associate dean for academic and student affairs; Donald D. Pritchett, Jr., M.S., J.D., assistant dean for admissions and student affairs; and Suzanne Templer, D.O., learning community mentor.
