Four faculty members from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences volunteered at a regional Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta (FAMAT) mathematics competition for local high school students on Feb. 2.
The faculty served as Dispute Center Judges, evaluating the merit of disputed solutions that differed from those provided in the FAMAT answer key. The competition was hosted by Ferguson High School in Miami and the school’s Mu Alpha Theta club sponsor, Teresita Lemus, Ed.D., an adjunct professor at the college who teaches on NSU’s Kendall campus.
Serving as judges from the college were Jason Gershman, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of mathematics; Jeffrey Lyons, Ph.D., assistant professor; Julian Moorehead, Ph.D., visiting professor, and Fuzhen Zhang, Ph.D., professor.
More than 1,200 students from South Florida competed in the event, which featured math problems in six categories, such as calculus and statistics. Students from American Heritage School in Plantation won the competition.
