Overcast conditions and the threat of thunderstorms did not deter more than 150 people from participating in the Community Day and Health Fair event held on the NSU Fort Myers Campus on November 16. The four-hour event featured services and presentations provided by community partners such as Walgreens, and the Florida Department of Health, as well as giveaways, entertainment and activities for “kids” of all ages.
“Many of our student organizations go into the community to perform outreach. So it was nice to have our neighbors come to ‘our house’ for change”, said SGA President Janessa Martinez. “NSU is a great University, and we wanted the chance to show that to the people in this community.”
The day represented a collaborative effort between the Student Government Association, and the administrative and academic staff at Fort Myers. In addition to the services and activities on offer, it was also an opportunity for the Fort Myers campus to showcase some of the great work that takes place there on a daily basis. Guests were able to observe medical care simulation exercises performed by some advanced students in the Nursing program.
“This was an important event for the University, and the Fort Myers campus specifically,” said Judy Rossington, Nursing Support Coordinator. “One of our goals is to continue to enhance community outreach, and being able to do this with the support of our community partners was even more satisfying.”
Site Director, Kevin Hunter was full of praise, stating, “I felt our students did an outstanding job – be it registering attendees, serving food, giving tours or just welcoming guests to our campus. I shouldn’t expect anything less because we have great students!”
Other community partners involved with the event included:
Amazing Adventures, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Family Music Time, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Healthy Start, Costco, Pop’z BBQ and Catering, Radiology Regional, Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers Police and Fire Departments, Senior Friends Association, ZUMBA Fit Studios, and Chili’s Restaurants.
