Gary Gershman, J.D., Ph.D., associate professor at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, was featured on the “Health, Wellness & Wisdom” radio program, broadcast on WHNZ 1250 AM in Tampa, on Sept.  7. Gershman provided analysis on the recent Republican and Democratic national conventions.

As part of the discussion, Gershman compared the Republicans’ speeches to that of the Democrats, who had concluded their convention the night prior to Gershman’s interview.

“I think they did an okay job at both conventions,” Gershman said. “The thing that really surprised me about last night was the Democrats heavily criticized Republicans for not giving specifics. So I really expected to hear more specifics from President Obama when he spoke—and he didn’t give them.”

Still, Gershman said Obama’s speech touched on many topics important to independent voters, especially in Michigan and Ohio.

While much was made of the speeches and events surrounding the two conventions, Gershman said the information released by the candidates between now and the November election may have a greater impact on its outcome.

“In many ways, the conventions are feel-good parties, and they’re chances to set the stage for the next two months, especially the debates,” he said.
