The next Hot Topics in Psychology series talk, titled “Twelve-Step Recovery for Substance Use Disorders: Findings and Unresolved Issues,” will take place on Thursday, Mar. 17, from noon to 1:00 p.m., in the Carl DeSantis Building, room 2060. The event will include a presentation by Christian DeLucia, Ph.D., assistant professor at NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies.
This talk will discuss current literature on the availability and popularity of 12-step recovery as a treatment option for individuals with substance-use disorders. Findings of the study, which centers on processes of recovery and current recovery practices in long-term members of Narcotics Anonymous, will be presented. Lastly, DeLucia’s talk will include an exploration between clinical and counseling psychology, the 12-step recovery process, and training those in the mental health professions on how best to assist those with drug-use disorders.
Hot Topics in Psychology is a free brown-bag lecture series that enables students to gain a firsthand perspective of research in specific areas of psychology and also serves to open up potential scholarship collaboration among NSU students and faculty members. The series is co-hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies. Those attending are encouraged to bring their lunches to the talks, providing their own “food for thought.” Pizza also will be served.
