The week after finals (May 1st-7th) seven students traveled to Negril, Jamaica on the International Sharks and Service (SAS) Trip. SAS trips are weekend-long or week-long serv
ice trips through the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Each of these trips work with a social issue and have student site leaders to guide the group through the experience.
The issue that this week worked with was community development. Students had the opportunity to work with to assist in building a pavilion at the school site so the students at the school could have a place to go at lunch that was out of the sun. NSU Students were able to contribute to the building of this structure by doing everything from mixing cement to cutting steel and wood to put the structure together. Additionally, students were able to contribute to building a home for a woman in the community that is homeless. Students were able to place flooring, cut and build siding to the home as well as paint the ceiling. The group also spent a day off at YS Falls experiencing the natural beauty of the environment in Jamaica. For the duration of the trip students stayed in housing located directly on the beach. During downtime the group had the opportunity to relax by the water, get to know one another, and reflect on their experiences.
