Environmental Science Webinars (December)

JOIN THE MEEC WEBINAR SERIES

The Marine Environmental Education Center has always striven to bring the ocean to the classroom! In this webinar series, we will be collaborating with different marine scientists to cover a variety of environmental topics every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00 P.M.  These webinars are appropriate for students ages 10 and up, but all are welcome!  Just click the link at the scheduled time to join ANY of the meetings below!

Water Proofing
with Julie D’Errico
December 1, 2020,  3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Have you ever wondered why birds spend so much time preening and bathing? It is because clean and waterproof feathers are vital to the survival of birds by keeping them warm, able to fly, weatherproof, and for seabirds and waterbirds able to float and dive for food. Join us this week to learn more about birds and their amazing adaptations with Julie D’Errico from the South Florida Wildlife Center!

Aquaponics: Did I Grow That?
with MEEC Education Team
December 3, 2020, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Aquaponics is the combination of hydroponics, which is growing plants in a soil-less media, and aquaculture, which is farming fish. At the MEEC, we have our own aquaponics system to supplement Captain’s diet. This closed, symbiotic system allows us to be self-sustainable and decrease our carbon footprint. Join us today to learn about aquaponics with our MEEC Education Team, Carley Todd and Taylor Apter!

Genomics: The Code to Evolution
with Jose Victor Lopez
December 8, 2020,   3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Professor Lopez’s research at Nova Southeastern University pivots on the action of genes/genomes, microbes and evolution. For 25 years, his work has applied genomics tools to address various specific questions in marine biology, invertebrate-microbial symbiosis, microbial ecology, forensics, gene expression, and systematics/phylogenetics. Join us to learn all about Dr. Lopez’s current research project.

Conservation Florida
with Traci Dean
December 10, 2020,   3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Traci Dean has always been passionate about protecting Florida’s wild and working lands for the generations of Floridians to come. She leads Conservation Florida as Executive Director & CEO, overseeing statewide land conservation efforts. Her work with Conservation Florida includes fostering strategic partnerships, engaging the community, and facilitating large-scale land transactions. Join us today to learn about Traci’s journey in environmental law!

Cyanobacteria and Harmful Algae Blooms
with Benjamin Kramer

December 15, 2020,   3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Benjamin is an algae biologist studying the effects of climate change on harmful, toxin-producing cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems. He works with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to monitor algae abundance and toxins present in major lakes and ponds. Join us today to learn all about Benjamin’s critical work!

Sharks and The Global FinPrint
with Gina Clementi
December 17, 2020,   3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Gina Clementi is a marine ecologist at FIU, using Baited Remote Underwater Videos (BRUVs) to assess marine predator abundance and diversity. She’s part of the Global FinPrint, a project which unites researchers and collaborators around the world to study sharks, rays, and other marine life using BRUVs. Join us today to learn more about BRUVs and the Global FinPrint project!
