About the Race & the Special Olympics Cause
The race benefits Special Olympics Broward County (SOBC), which provides FREE athletic programs to enrich the lives and improve the confidence of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Sallarulo’s Race for Champions 5K Run/Walk was created by Paul Sallarulo, a member of the NSU Board of Trustees, to raise money for SOBC. In the past five years, the event has raised more than $2.475 million to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics.
The 2011 race is also being held in memory of Judy Lippman and Don Taft, who was a great friend, philanthropist, business leader, amazing supporter of the community, and namesake of NSU’s Don Taft University Center.
NSU is proud to be the only private college in the nation to have a Special Olympics chapter located on its campus!
Don’t you love how eloquently Jesus in the NT illustrates His point in Matthew 18:1-5, using a child in response to the disciples’ question? It must have stunned them especially when he called a little child to Him and set him in the midst of those that were there that day. Imagine how that child must have felt? Working with children from around the world, nurturing children physically and mentally, though honorable, is temporal. Love the words from scripture when Jesus shared, “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.”
The 6th Race for Special Olympics speaks to me of the innocence found in children who have been identified as “special.” No matter what happens in life, they are held fast in the Savior’s hand.
To these children I say, “Welcome, You are important and respected. You are loved, mighty, and awesome!”
