The next talk in the Climate-Sustainability Lecture Series, hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Math, Science, and Technology, will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 25, from noon to 1:00 p.m., in the Mailman-Hollywood Building, room 309. Maribeth Gidley, M.P.H., D.O., an NSU alumna who is now with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Miami, will speak on “Future Health Concerns Associated with a Changing Climate.”
Presentation Abstract
Climate and the environment have always had a major influence on human health. As global climate change continues at an accelerated rate, the impact on both community and individual health will be considerable. Among the effects are a resurgence of infectious and vector-borne disease, respiratory illness, malnutrition, heat-related morbidity and mortality, and injuries. An understanding of the links between climate change and the global health burden is crucial if policy changes are to limit or mitigate the pending health crisis.
The Climate-Sustainability Lecture Series aims to increase the understanding of the science, technology, and policies relating to climate change and sustainable development. Experts in related fields from within NSU and other institutions are featured speakers. These lectures give faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss the scientific, technological, social, and policy aspects of sustainability-related issues.
