Breaking Barriers Fall Schedule (Registration is Open)

Breaking Barriers: Psychoeducational Groups are back. Registration is now open!

There will be two rounds of virtual group sessions this fall semester. Each group focuses on helping NSU students develop skills to address a variety of topics. The group is held for a 4-week period, meeting only one hour each week. Students can register for up to two groups and each group will have up to 12 students. The various topics and sessions are listed below, so you are sure to find a group that fits perfectly into your schedule.

MONDAY
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.: From COVID to Campus

The transition from home to living on your own during college can be stressful and overwhelming. Surviving the pandemic is not easy.  It was difficult for students faced with online classes for the past year due to COVID-19. Now learn helpful tips that will foster and develop a growth mindset including resiliency, interpersonal skills and coping mechanisms.

 TUESDAY
 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: The Time is Always Now

Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide time between specific activities. Inadequate time management can leave students overwhelmed and academically adrift. The purpose of this group is to provide students with skills to build better time management, featuring the 5 Elements to Successful Time Management.

WEDNESDAY
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Peace is just a thought away

Need help coping with stress or knowledge about various ways of implementing self-care into one’s daily routine? Then join us!

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Social Mobility: The International Experience

A safe space to have conversations and coffee(virtually) and receive resources and psychoeducation regarding the acculturational lived- experience for international students at NSU.

THURSDAY
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: Swimming with Sharks

Going away to college is a huge transition in the life of a young adult. So, developing a healthy positive network of relationships can help promote student success during the college years and beyond. Learn how to define the various forms of relationships, discuss the importance of having healthy and positive relationships, and its possible effects on academic success.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Be Like Water

Going with the flow is not always easy. Confronting stress with elasticity is a skill that can be learned. It’s important to establish a routine and grow internal characteristics to recharge energy and manage stress effectively. This group will utilize resilience as the building blocks toward facing stress and establishing self-care through a systematic way. Topics covered include self-awareness, acceptance, self-compassion, and instituting a growth mind-set.

6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: What Lies Beneath
You are finally in college living as an adult on your own! On the surface, it feels like a fun, new adventure, but when you dig deeper, the pressures of figuring out a career, managing deadlines, making new friends while being away from the people you love the most can be a lot to manage alone. Learn how to begin mastering your thoughts and feelings with Emotional Intelligence.
