On Saturday September 17, 2011, Orlando SEC hosted a CPR/ AED training
that was sponsored by Orlando SGA and with the partnership of the Orlando
Sharkateer’s volunteer club. There were a total of eight participants all from
different Orlando NSU programs . CPR is the acronym for Cardio-Pulmonary
Resuscitation which is a combination of simulating the breathing for the lungs and the pumping of the heart. CPR is made up of two parts: Rescue breathing and chest compressions. Rescue Breathing requires exhaling air from your lungs into the victim’s lungs so that they can absorb the oxygen. Chest Compressions requires manually compressing the heart by pressing down on the chest.
The facilitator Julie Preiss from the Chesapeake AED Services provided training on Adult, Child, and Infant CPR . In addition participants received information on helping a choking victim( Adult, Child, Infant). Each participant was able to practice each step and receive their CPR certification that is valid for two years.
DID YOU KNOW …
- About 5,900 children 18 years old and under suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year from all causes including: trauma, cardiovascular causes and sudden infant death syndrome.
- Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are now widely available in public places such as schools, airports, and workplaces.
- Even if CPR is performed, defibrillation with an AED is required to stop the abnormal rhythm and restore a normal heart rhythm.
- Less than one-third of out-of-state hospital sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR
- The American Heart Association does not have a minimum age requirement for people to learn CPR. The ability to perform CPR is based more on body strength rather than age.
- The American Heart Association trains more than 12 million people in CPR annually including healthcare professionals and the general public.
