NSU’S Alvin Sherman Library Research, and Information Technology Center Celebrates its 20th Anniversary
Two decades ago, Broward County welcomed the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center. It is one of the largest library buildings in Florida, and the largest publicly accessible research library in the United States.
This library was opened to the public on December 8, 2001 – and now it’s time to celebrate 20 years of service!
The Alvin Sherman Library is a unique joint-use facility serving the residents of Broward County as well as NSU students, faculty, and staff members. Thanks to an agreement between the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and NSU, the Alvin Sherman Library offers traditional public library services as well as the full academic resources.
The building is five stories high with wireless access throughout the building for its visitors, reading niches, 34 study rooms, 1,400 user seats and a café. It contains research materials, specialized databases, popular fiction and nonfiction books, magazines and journals, CDs, DVDs. Its patrons have access to over 450,000 online resources.
The library also is home to permanent works of art, including The Glass Garden by famed glass artist Dale Chihuly and a Buddhist prayer wheel, which was blessed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. On the second floor, the Adolfo and Marisela Cotilla Gallery showcases important works of art and exhibits throughout the year. On the same floor, the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center contains original artifacts from the Holocaust and other educational resources. The library is also home to the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center and the newly opened Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation
