NSU Celebrates Homecoming and Alumni Week
The NSU community was thrilled to celebrate another successful Homecoming Week last November 2-8, 2020. Despite being in a pandemic, students did not miss out on the opportunity to celebrate their Shark Pride. The Office of Campus Life and Student Engagement and the Alumni Association along with several campus partners, groups, and offices, strategically planned a modified week of events following NSU COVID-19 guidelines. Homecoming was a fun-filled week where students participated in events such as the Homecoming Pep Rally, DJ Battle, Inaugural Parade, Election Watch Party, Homecoming Celebration, and much more.
The Homecoming festivities began on November 2nd with free breakfast and lots of giveaways throughout the day at events such as Wake Up Sharks and the Novelty Explosion. Each student had the opportunity to get one of two Homecoming themed shirt designs at all the events. During the Bleed Shark Blue Pep Rally, students voted for the best and their favorite DJ at the DJ Battle. Out of 6 DJ contestants, the winning DJ—Ryan “Runit” Joseph headlined and pumped up the energy at the Homecoming Celebration which took place at end of the week.
On November 3, Election Day, students practiced their civic duty and proudly came together in unity to watch the results of the 2020 presidential election during the Election Night Party. In preparation for Veteran’s Day, students had the opportunity to write letters for our troops serving our country at home and overseas. An online submission form was also available for students who are remote learning but still wanted to participate.
Continuing the “bleed shark blue” spirit, student organizations decorated cars, banners, and posters to walk in the first-ever Homecoming Parade. The week-long festivities culminated with the Homecoming Celebration where the new Homecoming Royalty was crowned. Justin Jackson was selected as Homecoming King and Jaylynne Thomas was selected as Homecoming Queen.
Whether students were on-campus or virtual, they actively immersed themselves in the festivities and continued Homecoming traditions. To view pictures from Homecoming Week, view the gallery here: https://www.nova.edu/campuslife/homecoming/2020/gallery/index
