Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Professor Gives Invited Talks, Publishes Research

Fuzhen Zhang, Ph.D., professor at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, recently delivered invited talks at two universities in California. Zhang also co-authored research on inequalities of generalized matrix functions, which was recently published in the Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra.

About the Talks

Zhang spoke at San Jose State University on Mar. 21 and Pomona College on Mar. 27. In the presentations, Zhang discussed his recent research findings on matrix decompositions. The research states that if A is a square matrix with numerical range contained in the right-half plane, then the matrix demits the decomposition A=XZY, where Y is the conjugate transpose of X, and Z is a unitary and diagonal matrix. Zhang showed that such a matrix Z is unique up to permutation, and also demonstrated how to construct the matrix Z in the decomposition.

About the Article

Title: “Inequalities of Generalized Matrix Functions via Tensor Products”
Authors: Vehbi Paksoy, Ph.D., associate professor at the college; Ramazan Türkmen, Ph.D., former visiting professor at the college; and Fuzhen Zhang, Ph.D., professor at the college

From the Abstract: “By an embedding approach and through tensor products, some inequalities for generalized matrix functions (of positive semi-definite matrices) associated with any subgroup of the permutation group and any irreducible character of the subgroup are obtained.”

The group’s research was supported in part by a Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Mini Grant. Read the complete article online, via the Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra.

More Than Two Decades of Research

Zhang is the author of multiple books on mathematical topics such as matrices and linear algebra. Over the years, his journal articles have been cited by thousands of researchers from a variety of fields. In 2013, Zhang earned the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of the Year award.
