The NSU Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences announces the publication of the sixth issue of Quadrivium, an online journal of scholarship and creative works by college faculty and graduate students that explore the college’s 2014-2015 academic theme of identity. The new issue, and all previous issues, are available on the Quadrivium webpage.
“These texts draw attention to how individuals construct their sense of self in relation to local cultures and the environment, and they reflect upon the history and identify of NSU itself,” said Eric Mason, Ph.D., assistant professor at the college, and co-editor of this issue of Quadrivium.
The issue’s cover image comes from “Wastelands to Wonderlands: The Shifting Environmental Identities of Alaska and Florida,” a photo-essay by Paul Arena, Ph.D., assistant professor at the college, which draws attention to the role that the environment plays in identity through Arena’s exploration of the unique landscapes of Florida and Alaska.
Historical identities—such as removing children from post-revolutionary Cuba in the 1960s—are constructed in essays such as “Re-Imagining Home: Operation Pedro Pan in the Cuban-American Imaginary,” by Yvette Fuentes, Ph.D., associate professor at the college.
In similar fashion, “Dreaming in Chiapas” is an original painting of two young girls by Eileen Smith-Cavros, Ph.D., associate professor at the college, who was inspired by her trips to Chiapas, Mexico, during the 1990s when she frequently spotted young girls selling small, homemade dolls reflecting the country’s Zapatista movement.
“Butterfly Biology” is original photography by Joshua Feingold, Ph.D., professor at the college, who showcases the beauty of butterflies through his macro-photography captured on campus and in the surrounding Davie community.
“The First Fifty Years: A University Looks Back” recounts NSU’s history through interviews with alumni, staff, and community pioneers by Keren Moros and Kevin Lichty, students in the college’s M.A. in Writing program.
Other works include “The Logical Problem of Evil and the Limited God Defense,” by Darren Hibbs, Ph.D., assistant professor at the college; and “Creating a Healthier Campus: A Report on the Effectiveness of NSU’s ‘Slimming with the Sharks’ Wellness Program,” by Corey Peacock, Ph.D., and Tobin Silver, Ph.D., assistant professors at the college, and Pradeep Vanguri, Ph.D., associate professor at the college.
The term Quadrivium refers to the four arts and sciences studied in the Middle Ages. The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences has its own quadrivium with it four divisions––Humanities; Math, Science, and Technology; Performing and Visual Arts; and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
