Oceanographic Center to Host 4th Annual Research Symposium of the Florida Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy

The Florida Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy will be hosting its 4th annual research symposium at the NSU Oceanographic Center (8000 N. Ocean Dr., Dania Beach, located inside the John U. Lloyd State Park) on May 2-4, 2014. The event is scheduled to begin with an ice breaker at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2. Presentations and a panel discussion will be held on Saturday, May 3. The symposium will conclude on Sunday, May 4 with a fun, group activity to be announced. All current students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) and prospective graduate students working in the marine mammal field are encouraged to attend. There is the added option to give an oral presentation. This is an opportunity for students to practice their presentation skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Presentations may focus on research projects at any stage or thesis/dissertation proposals.

For those students who are interested in attending the symposium or presenting their work, details and instructions on how to register can be found on the FL Student Chapter SMM website. The abstract and registration deadline is April 18, 2014. The cost of attendance is $20 ($30 if past the registration deadline). T-shirts will be available for purchase.

We are also looking for volunteers to help on the days of the symposium. Tasks may include checking attendees in, distributing pamphlets and t-shirts, escorting attendees, etc. If you are interested in volunteering, please send an email to floridasmm@gmail.com with your availability and t-shirt size. We will send out emails to those who are interested with more details.

For any further questions or comments, please feel free to email us at floridasmm@gmail.com.
