MELBOURNE, Fla. – Two more wins have resulted in two more awards for the No. 8 Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team, as both Mark Matthews and Dwayne Gibson were recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Player and Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
The honor is the fourth overall for Matthews, while Gibson picks up his first of the season.
Matthews continued to make his case for SSC Player of the Year in leading the Sharks to decisive victories over Rollins and Saint Leo this past week. The redshirt junior extended his current double-double streak to five games by averaging 19.0 points and 12.0 rebounds, now giving him 10 overall on the year. In Wednesday’s rout of the Tars, Matthews needed just 27 minutes to record 12 points and 13 boards, while adding five assists. Three nights later, he collected 26 points and 11 rebounds against Saint Leo’s lengthy front line, marking his seventh game this season with 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds. Matthews currently ranks among the Top-3 in the SSC in: scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage.
Gibson, meanwhile, was a force on both ends of the floor in the pair of wins, averaging 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals. The native of Carmel, Ind. keyed a defensive effort that held Rollins to a season-low 31 percent shooting from the field and under 60 points for only the second time this year. Gibson then followed up with a stat-stuffing performance versus Saint Leo that included 14 points, nine rebounds, a season-high five blocks and three steals, keeping Nova Southeastern atop the SSC standings by 1.5 games.
The Sharks hit the road this Wednesday for a pivotal SSC matchup with Eckerd. For complete coverage, follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball or visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com.
