FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern head softball coach Julie LeMaire has announced the schedule for the 2019 season, set to begin on Feb. 1 at the DII Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. The Sharks are slated to compete in 52 total games, including 23 at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
“I am excited to open the 2019 season with this group of young ladies,” boasted LeMaire. “We have a lot of new faces that will see significant playing time for us. With new additions to the circle, behind the plate, in the middle infield, and in the outfield, we have depth and talent that I can’t wait to see compete together this spring. We will be challenged with great competition right away at the Gulf Shores Tournament opening weekend, which I look forward to that preparing us for our tough conference schedule.
As stated by LeMaire, the Sharks will begin the season at the DII Gulf Shores Invitational on Friday, Feb. 1 and will play a total of six games over three days. All six opponents the Sharks will see (Montevallo, Shorter, Valdosta State, Union, Alabama-Huntsville and West Georgia) are members of the NCAA DII South Region and will be a great opportunity to get a glimpse on what post-season matchups might be possible come May.
Nova Southeastern will start home play on Feb. 8, hosting two weekend doubleheaders. The Sharks will welcome Emporia State on Friday evening before hosting East Stroudsburg on Sunday, Feb. 10.
Sunshine State Conference competition will start on the road for NSU, as the team heads to Lakeland, Fla. to take on Florida Southern in a three-game series starting on Feb. 15.
The next weekend, the Sharks will return to THE Spring Games hosted at the Legends Way Ballfields at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. While there, NSU will face off against Davenport and fellow SSC member Lynn on Sunday, Feb. 24, before playing against Davenport once again and Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday, Feb. 25.
The Sharks will return to SSC play for a three-game series against the Embry-Riddle Eagles at home on Mar. 1-2, before traveling north to compete against Albany State (Mar. 5) and Columbus State (Mar. 6). That weekend, NSU will head to Miami Shores to play against Barry on Mar. 9-10.
A doubleheader against Queens College on Mar. 13 starts a seven-game homestand for the Sharks, followed by an SSC series against Saint Leo on Mar. 16-17. NSU will then compete in its final non-conference doubleheader of the regular season on Mar. 19 against Flagler. March will be wrapped up three days later as the team will travel to Tampa to take on the Spartans Mar. 22-23.
The month of April will see Nova Southeastern compete in three of their last five SSC series at the AD Griffin Sports Complex, starting with the Lynn Fighting Knights on Tuesday Apr. 2. Home play will continue that weekend, as the Eckerd Tritons will head to Fort Lauderdale on Apr. 5. A road series against Florida Tech (Apr. 12-13) comes before their final home appearance against the Rollins Tars Apr. 18-19. Nova Southeastern’s 2019 regular season will come to a close Apr. 26-27 as the Sharks head to West Palm Beach to face off against the reigning SSC champions, Palm Beach Atlantic.
