Sharks Place Five on D2CAA All-South Region Teams

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Following a memorable season in which the program cracked the Top-25 for the first time since 2007, the Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team landed five players on the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-South Region teams, announced Wednesday. Sebastian Loibl led the way with first-team honors, while Aleks BergBradley FountainDarwin Lom and Curtis Thorn were each named to the second team. The Sharks’ five overall selections tied Palm Beach Atlantic for the most in the region.

Loibl caused fits for opposing defenses this fall, collecting a team-high 10 goals to go along with five assists for the Sunshine State Conference’s top scoring offense during league play. The sophomore tallied multiple points in six of his 13 starts, totaling a season-high six following a hat trick against Flagler on Sept. 18. His goals-per-game (0.833) and points-per-game (2.08) numbers ranked tops in the SSC.

As a true freshman, Berg exploded onto the scene for the Sharks in 2018 by recording eight points in his first five career matches. The Oslo, Norway native would eventually finish the year with 18 points on four goals and a conference-leading 10 assists, the most by a Nova Southeastern player since 2008.

Fountain, meanwhile, left a lasting impression in his lone season with Nova Southeastern. In 16 starts in the midfield, the graduate student racked up 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Even more impressive, 12 of his 16 points came against SSC opponents, including a season-high four versus Saint Leo on Oct. 13.

Lom earns his third consecutive D2CCA All-South Region recognition following a senior campaign in which he piled up nine goals and five assists while starting all 17 games for the Sharks. Lom set the tone early on this season for Nova Southeastern with at least one point in the first five matches, including goals in four of them, before capping the year among the Top-10 in the SSC in goals, points, and game-winners.

Yet another impact addition in 2018 for head coach Matt Watts, Thorn proved to be a force for the SSC’s premier backline. After sitting out the opening two matches due to injury, Thorn started the final 15 games of the season for the Sharks, playing 90-plus minutes in 13 of them. He helped guide Nova Southeastern to eight clean sheets and a 0.70 goals-against average in league action, while also chipping in with two goals and four assists.
