NSU Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention

In 2007, the NSU Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention was developed to support crisis prevention efforts, with a focus on suicide prevention. Our goal is to reach all NSU students, faculty, and staff. The presentations provide the NSU community with information regarding the risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs of suicide and violence. Information about how to respond to a troubled individual and the resources that are available at NSU and in the community are also presented. Recently, we received a SAMHSA Campus Suicide Prevention Grant and are developing web-based trainings to extend prevention efforts to the NSU Student Educational Centers and the NSU on-line community. For more information about our office and other helpful resources, please visit: http://www.nova.edu/suicideprevention.

NSPIRE

With the guidance of Dr. Scott Poland and Dr. Gene Cash, a group of clinical psychology
graduate students formed NSU Students for Prevention, Intervention, and Response to Emergencies (NSPIRE). NSPIRE hopes to initiate a campus-wide movement by increasing awareness regarding resources; provide opportunities for enhancing professional development and research; and create a forum for discussion and advocacy within the NSU community. In the last year, NSPIRE has organized several on-campus events to support suicide prevention, held a fundraiser to benefit Haiti, and served on the planning committee for the Tri-County Triangle of Care Suicide Prevention Conference. To learn more about NSPIRE, please feel free to email us at tr438@nova.edu or check us out on Facebook at NSU Students for Prevention, Intervention, and Response to Emergencies.
