FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  JANUARY, 4, 2011

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Shepard Broad Law Center Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus Joseph Harbaugh was recently designated a Fulbright Specialist in Negotiation and Mediation.  This is the first time a faculty member from NSU has been awarded this designation.

Harbaugh plans to use the Fulbright in May at NSU’s academic partner university, Roma Tre in Italy where he will teach negotiation as a module in the International Business Contracts course for five weeks. Additionally, he plans to lead a faculty seminar in the use of distance education technology and simulation to enhance traditional courses.

“The designation of Fulbright Specialist in Negotiation and Mediation is a distinct honor for and another crowning achievement in Dean Emeritus Harbaugh’s distinguished career in legal education and service to the legal profession,” stated the Law Center’s current dean Athornia Steele, J.D.  “The Fulbright will enable Joe to share his expertise and experience abroad.”

The Fulbright Specialist Program promotes linkages between U.S. academics and professionals and their counterparts at overseas universities or institutions with education-focused programming. The program is designed to award grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative two to six week projects at higher education institutions in more than 100 countries worldwide. U.S. faculty and professionals apply to join a Roster of Specialists for a five-year term.  Roster candidates are reviewed by peers in the same discipline, and by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Harbaugh was the dean of NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center from 1995 to 2008. He also served as the dean at the University of Richmond Law School and a member of the faculty at several other law schools in his four decade academic career including Connecticut, Duke, Temple, Georgetown and American Universities.

Harbaugh has served in a wide range of legal education leadership positions, including the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), the Council of the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, as a member and former Chair of the Board of Directors of Access Group, Inc., legal education’s non-profit student loan program, and as the AALS representative in the ABA House of Delegates for 19 years.

A leader in the clinical education movement and a recognized expert in legal negotiation, Harbaugh is the co-author of a standard clinical text, Interviewing, Counseling and Negotiating: Skills for Effective Representation, and a best-selling instructional CD, The Fundamentals of Negotiation. Harbaugh conducts negotiation workshops for lawyers, business people and government officials on behalf of the Practicing Law Institute and ALI-ABA. His clients include many of the National Law Journal’s Top 100 firms and dozens of Fortune 100 corporations. Harbaugh also coaches and leads negotiation teams for law firms and businesses.
