Katherine Palacio, an alumna of the M.A. in Writing program at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, co-wrote a book chapter with Kevin Dvorak, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of writing center at the college. The chapter appeared in The Successful High School Writing Center: Building the Best Program with Your Students (Teachers College Press).

Titled, “Change I Can See: A High School English Teacher’s Perspective of the Writing Center’s Impact on Bilingual, Hispanic Students,” the piece covers the challenges of implementing and sustaining a writing center, while detailing the rewards of its continued success.

In the chapter, Palacio provides a narrative of her experience bringing to fruition a writing center at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens, where she teaches English. Palacio collaborated on the project with Dvorak, who serves as vice president of the International Writing Centers Association.

At NSU, Dvorak teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in writing at the college. He also leads the college’s COMP Fellows program, which provides course-based writing assistance to students enrolled in specific COMP courses. Students from the college’s M.A. in Writing program serve as Fellows.
