Next Mathematics Colloquium Talk: Using Shadowing for Problem-Solving

Mathematics Colloquium TalkAlthough we often rely on computers to produce perfect mathematical results, correct answers aren’t always guaranteed. But, don’t worry—you’ll learn a solution to this problem at the next Mathematics Colloquium Series talk, hosted by the NSU Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.

“Shadowing: Right Results from Wrong Numbers”
Mathematics Colloquium Series | Hüseyin Koçak, Ph.D. (University of Miami)
Wednesday, Feb. 12
Noon–1:00 p.m.
Mailman-Hollywood Building | Second Floor Auditorium

About the Talk

Numerical simulations are indispensable in the investigation of specific dynamical systems. Unfortunately, computer arithmetic with real numbers is not always exact. Since chaotic dynamical systems amplify small errors at an exponential rate, the results of most simulations are unreliable. Using computer simulations to illustrate his talk, Kocak will describe the method of shadowing for extracting mathematically rigorous results from erroneous numerical computations.

About the Series
Hosted by the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology, the Mathematics Colloquium Series aims to increase awareness of mathematics’ importance and applications in daily life. The series also gives mathematics faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss independent research and share their passion for the subject.
