KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Less than 48 hours away from their Elite Eight matchup against Saint Anselm, Nova Southeastern’s David Dennis and Mark Matthews have made headlines, earning 2019 NABC Coaches’ Division II First Team All-District nods. The Sharks’ duo is the only pair of teammates to make the first team in the south region.
Dennis adds his latest accolade to a list that already includes D2CCA Second Team All-South Region, First Team All-Sunshine State Conference, as well as Google Cloud First Team Academic All-District. As a senior, Dennis has filled up the stat sheet with 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.8 assists to go along with 2.8 steals per game on the defensive end. His latest performance of 28 points, six rebounds, and five assists landed him NCAA South Region Tournament MVP, and now has the Sharks just one win away from reaching the Final Four. In just two seasons with Nova Southeastern, Dennis has surpassed the 1,000-point mark, and will close his collegiate career as one of only two players in NCAA history, across all divisions, with at least 1,800 career points, 600 career rebounds, 700 career assists, and 300 career steals.
The team leader in both points (20.3 ppg) and rebounds (9.5 rpg), Matthews has been a double-double machine for Nova Southeastern in 2018-19. After pouring in a season-high 32 points in the NCAA South Region Semifinal victory over West Alabama, the redshirt junior collected his 15th double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 boards to help the Sharks clinch the regional title. Matthews finds himself on the NABC All-District First Team having already been selected as a first team all-region performer, in addition to being honored as the SSC Newcomer of the Year. The native of Bonita Springs, Fla. has scored in double-figures in all but one of his 32 starts, and has set numerous single-season, NCAA-era program records for the Sharks this season, including: points (649), field goals (276), total rebounds (303), and offensive rebounds (142).
Dennis and Matthews will lead NSU into the Elite Eight showdown against fifth-seeded Saint Anselm this Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET. For complete coverage of the action, visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com or follow the Sharks on Twitter at @NSU_MBasketball.
