MELBOURNE, Fla. – Known more for its offensive prowess, Nova Southeastern earned some recognition for its work done on the other end of the court Monday, as Mark Matthews was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Matthews keyed two more wins this past week for the fifth-ranked Sharks, beating both Rollins and Florida Tech on the road to remain the league’s lone unbeaten. The redshirt-junior averaged a double-double with 11.5 points and 10.0 rebounds to go along with 3.0 steals per game, including a 13-point, 12-rebound effort Saturday against the Panthers.
Nova Southeastern entered the week surrendering 84.7 points per game, yet held both opponents to 63.5-point clip.
Matthews currently ranks among the Top-5 in the SSC in: scoring (19.0 ppg), rebounding (8.3 rpg) and field goal percentage (59.4%).
