MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the fourth time in a little over a month, Nova Southeastern forward Mark Matthews has been recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
The redshirt junior collected his 11th and 12th double-doubles of the season, as the third-ranked Sharks knocked off both No. 14 Lynn and Tampa on the road to lock up the program’s first-ever SSC regular season title. In the two wins, Matthews averaged 19.5 points and 11.0 rebounds, while adding 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals. In a matchup between the league’s Top-2 teams last Wednesday, the Bonita Springs, Fla. native recorded 23 points and a game-high 10 boards, helping carry Nova Southeastern back from 14 down with just 9:32 to play against Lynn. Then on Saturday at Tampa, despite battling early foul trouble, Matthews still finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the Sharks’ historic victory.
Matthews currently ranks among the Top-3 in the SSC in: scoring (19.6 ppg), rebounding (9.6 rpg) and field goal percentage (57.8%).
NSU will wrap up the regular season on Senior Night this Wednesday against Palm Beach Atlantic. All fans are encouraged to wear white. For complete coverage of the action, follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball or visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com.
