Join NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography for the next Mathematics Colloquium Series event: “Asymptotic Stability of Non-Unique Solutions of Initial Value Problems.” This talk is free and open to the public.

Muhammad_IslamSpeaker: Muhammad Islam, Ph.D., professor, University of Dayton
Thursday, March 31
12:10–12:50 p.m.
Mailman-Hollywood Building | Second Floor Auditorium

This talk will consider an initial value problem (IVP) of a first order nonlinear ordinary differential equation and will assume that the IVP can have more than one solution. The discussion will explore a new type of stability property of these solutions. This stability is not the standard Liapunov stability commonly studied in the field of differential equations.

Guest speaker Muhammad Islam received his M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University. His primary research is in the field of ordinary and functional differential equations and qualitative analysis.

About the Series

Hosted by NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography Department of Mathematics, the Mathematics Colloquium Series aims to increase awareness of the importance of mathematics and applications in daily life. The series also gives mathematics faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss independent research and share their passion for the subject.

Next Lecture: Ming-Liang Cai, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Miami, will present the series’ final talk of the semester on April 12, 2016, at noon.

For more information, contact Jeffrey W. Lyons, Ph.D., assistant professor, at (954) 262-7931.
