Approximately 30 students from Miramar High school participated in the 2014 Aviation Summer Program, hosted by NSU’s Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health and Justice. This is the second summer that the program has been made available to high school students.

In partnership with American Flyers, the program provided the opportunity for students who are interested in aviation to further explore those interests and participate in hands-on experiences guided by professionals in the field. Students gained a foundation in the basics of flight and an understanding of the aviation industry via language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The students were even provided the chance to learn in flight simulators – not something every summer camp attendee gets to do. And given this is an educational summer program, every week the students had to demonstrate what they learned via “special projects,” which were shared with their instructors and other program participants.

Miramar High students participate as the school is home to an Aviation Magnet program. The Aviation Science Program is designed to prepare students interested in aviation for a variety of post- secondary programs leading to careers in the industry including commercial pilot, FAA certified mechanic, aviation administration and m ore.
