I Ask - Sexual Assault Awareness Month April 2019During the month of April, Nova Southeastern University is hosting a series of programs, workshops, and educational initiatives in recognition of the national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign to promote awareness and prevention. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center has identified this year’s theme as: “I Ask.” The theme encourages and empowers everyone – no matter the scenario – to ask for consent, listen, and accept answers without pressuring or coercing others.

Step UP! Strategies for Bystander Intervention

Presented by Victoria Myers, Assistant Director of Housing Services & Operations. Step UP! is a world-renown prosocial behavior and bystander intervention program which educates students to be proactive in helping others. In an interactive manner, Step UP! provides a framework for explaining the bystander effect, reviews relevant research and teaches skills for intervening successfully using an easy five-step method and a model for intervention which emphasizes safe, early, effective, and kind interventions.

ACT Shelter Donation Drive
Continuous through April 19 | 1st Floor Lobby (NSU Fort Myers Campus)

Coordinated by NSU Fort Myers Student Affairs. Abuse Counseling & Treatment, Inc. (ACT) is a private, not-for-profit agency committed to serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. ACT’s Residential Program and shelters offer 24-hour service to survivors and victims in need of safe housing and other services. In support of their efforts, we are asking that Fort Myers students and employees donate toiletries and clothing for the shelter and their residential programs.

Presented by Title IX-Human Resources & the NSU Peer Educators. Every Tuesday in April, NSU students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to wear teal in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence. Whether you don a teal tie, teal socks, a teal bracelet, or a teal ribbon, add a pop of teal to your wardrobe for a good cause. The NSU Peer Educators will also be distributing teal ribbons, t-shirts, and other awareness material to those who drop by. Representatives from Henderson Counseling & the NSU Public Safety Department will also be present to share information about relevant resources offered in support of those affected by sexual violence and those seeking to prevent it in our community.

Title VII, Title IX, and Everything In Between: Considerations of Sexual Harassment from the Classroom to the Courtroom

Presented by the Shepard Broad College of Law & Title IX-Human Resources. NSU will be hosting guest lectures and a panel discussion which will explore sexual harassment within the educational setting and the workplace. Specifically, guest speakers will be speaking about the impact of Title IX and Title VII in these environments, as well as the opportunity which exists for students and practicing legal professionals to create and sustain discrimination-free academic and workplace environments. The Tunnel Vision Experience

Presented by NSU Campus Life & Student Engagement, Residential Life & Housing & the NSU Peer Educators. The Tunnel Vision Experience provides a moving and thought-provoking glimpse into the complex and traumatic experiences of survivors. The experience includes a remarkable mix of visual, digital and live art meant to stir awareness and encourage active efforts at prevention by the students, faculty, and staff who participate.

Film Screening: “On The Basis of Sex”

Presented by the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law, the NSU American Association of University Women, and Title IX-Human Resources. NSU will host a free film screening of “On The Basis of Sex,” a film inspired by the true story of a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

Presented by the NSU Veterans Resource Center, Student Media & Student Mediation Services. There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Formally referred to as, Walk A Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence,” this event asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. NSU’s implementation of this event calls all members of our community to join in and aims to create a thought-provoking and playful opportunity to raise awareness through an exploration of the serious causes, effects, and remediations to sexualized violence against women. Not comfortable walking in high-heeled shoes? No worries! The NSU Veterans Resource Center will make combat boots available to those who prefer to march against violence in solidarity with the countless women who make up a significant portion of the U.S. military population.

Domestic Violence 101 Workshop

Presented by the Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. Facilitated by an experienced Prevention Specialist, this workshop will provide a general overview of domestic and intimate partner violence; discuss healthy relationships; explore the dynamics of intimate partner violence, and provide guidance on how best to provide aid to a friend or family member who may be affected by intimate partner violence. This workshop will also highlight the myriad of resources which are available to Broward County offered by Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc.

The “Escalation” Workshop

Presented by The One Love Foundation & Title IX-Human Resources. This film-based discussion will open your eyes to the warning signs of intimate partner abuse within the university setting and will leave you with strategies for recognizing relationship violence and supporting peers, family, and friends who may have this experience. The film follows a college-aged couple through the very sweet beginnings of their relationship and shows how seemingly minor unhealthy behaviors can escalate into abuse. After the film, workshop attendees will be invited to dive into a discussion about the film discussing the early warning signs of relationship abuse and what you can do if you witness or experience these warning signs.

NSU students and employees are invited to see Nancy J. Cotterman’s powerful exhibit on sexual assault and child abuse at the Broward County Governmental Center lobby at 115 S. Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

The organization seeks to address healthcare professionals and provide critical strategies for recognizing human trafficking amongst patients. Important community resources will also be explored during this session. Attend and learn skills that are critical to good healthcare practice in our community.

Webinar – “The Neurobiology & Traumatic Impact of Sexual Assault”

Hosted by Title IX-Human Resources and presented by the Justice Clearinghouse. This webinar aims to provide a foundational understanding of sexual violence and how to respond appropriately to survivors of sexual violence. This training will examine the neurobiology of trauma, including but not limited to a survivor’s emotional presentation, a survivor’s affect following trauma, memory deficits, dissociation, fight/flight/freeze response, and the lasting traumatic impact of sexual assault on survivor.

“These Hands Don’t Hurt” Gathering

Presented by Tampa SGA & Tampa SWAP. This event is intended to raise awareness about sexual assault and intimate partner violence prevention as well as local resources for survivors. Support the Tampa SGA and Tampa SWAP in their efforts at raising funds for the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and enjoy a delicious lunch from a local food truck. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign the These Hands Don’t Hurt pledge and commit to exhibiting respect and non-violence in their romantic and intimate relationships.
