Highlights of Homecoming 2011

NSU Sharks kicked off Homecoming Week “Shark Attack” with a bang!

At the Homecoming Tailgate:
Student, faculty and staff came out to celebrate their Shark Pride on Nov. 2, as President Hanbury led the crowd in a Shark cheer!  Students enjoyed good food, games and plenty of entertainment from NSU student organizations, The Sharkettes and Opulent Image Models.  The event wrapped up with the Swim Coach addressing the crowd and encouraging all to attend the meet over the weekend!

At the Flight Deck Follies:
Flight Deck FolliesEight of our finest “ladies” competed in our 8th annual Flight Deck Follies during NSU’s Homecoming Week. Flight Deck Follies is a male beauty pageant with a twist. Contestants dress up as beautiful women and compete to win the coveted Miss Flight Deck title! NSU student Greg Hinds took the crown this year for his fabulous performance as “Laquishanetta.”

At the Homecoming Bash:
The 2011 Homecoming Dance was a huge success this year.  Over 1,000 students attended the event held on Nov. 3, at Opium in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and dance until the wee hours. Student took a break from dancing for the important coronation of the 2011 Homecoming court!

Congratulations to our 2011 Homecoming Court:

  • Homecoming King & Queen: Isaiah Jones & Kristina LaBossiere
  • Junior Prince & Princess: Kory Evans & Sara Gawish
  • Sophomore Prince & Princess: Dan Tello & Brynne Hunt
  • Freshman Prince & Princess: Lance Tillery & Kaitlyn Baran

At the “Anything That Floats” Raft Races:
Unfortunately we found out not all things float at the Raft Races!  Students participating in the event made great efforts to get their teams from one end of the Gold Circle Lake to the other!  At the end of the event, held Nov. 4,  it was clear the Nature Club had the best design with their canoe/pontoon raft!  They were followed by Rotaract and Locks for Cause.  Congratulations to all the participants!

At the Comedy Show featuring Kevin Hart
The first ever “Laugh Your Fins Off” comedy event featuring Kevin Hart, held on Saturday, November 5th in the NSU Arena drew nearly 4,000 people. It was the perfect ‘sold out’ ending to the most successful Homecoming in NSU’s history! Kevin Hart kept the audience entertained by inviting Joey Wells, an up-and-coming comedian, to perform as his next act of the evening. There wasn’t a dry eye or a moment of silence in the Arena after Wells stepped on stage. The main event – Kevin Hart himself – was by far one of the best acts NSU has seen to date. If you don’t believe the hype or the buzz of those who attended, check out his upcoming film which will hit main-stream media soon.

At the Last Shark Standing finale
The search for NSU’s funniest student was finally over as the three finalists – Jonathan Killias, James Sinkevich, and Alex Weiss – of the “Last Shark Standing” competition were voted on by the live audience. The finalists underwent a series of auditions and were selected by students to open for Kevin Hart. James “Jim” Sinkevich claimed top honors by winning the audience’s laughs. He walked away with a $1,000 and an additional $1,000, which he will donate to Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Alex Weiss placed in second and received $500 and an additional $500 to donate to an NSU organization. Jonathan Killias rounded out the competition placing in third and received $250 and the same amount to donate to his organization of choice.
