MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the second time in as many weeks, Nova Southeastern’s Dwayne Gibson has been named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
After earning his first defensive honor of the season just seven days prior, the senior followed up the recognition with two more exemplary performances in a pair of SSC wins over Eckerd and Florida Tech, averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 12.5 rebounds to go along with 2.0 steals and 1.0 block.
In Wednesday’s 72-70 road victory at Eckerd, Gibson led a defensive charge that held the Tritons to just 23 first-half points on 26.9 percent shooting. Additionally, the native of Carmel, Ind. poured in a team-high 25 points, while collecting a career-high 13 boards in a full 40 minutes of action. Just three days later, Gibson and the Sharks dismantled Florida Tech by 44 points thanks to a defensive effort that limited SSC leading scorer Derek Murphy to just 6-of-18 shooting from the floor. Gibson finished with 12 more rebounds in the blowout, as Nova Southeastern maintained its 1.5-game lead atop the conference standings.
In a clash between the SSC’s Top-2 teams, the Sharks will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. this Wednesday to face No. 16 Lynn at 7:30 p.m. NSU defeated the Fighting Knights in a nail-biter, 87-85, in the season’s first meeting back on Jan. 16.
