Kelly Concannon Mannise, Ph.D., assistant professor at NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, along with undergraduate students Nadine Grifoni, criminal justice major, and Morgan Sanchez, psychology major, presented on a panel at the symposium on “Examining Public Voice, Human Rights, and Social Justice Across Time and Space,” held at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Apr. 5–6.
About the Panel
Title: “Speaking Up, Speaking Out: Community-Based Research to Improve Domestic Violence Services and Prevention Efforts”
During the panel discussion, Grifoni, Sanchez, and Concannon Mannise presented preliminary findings from their community-based research project on using new methods to raise awareness of domestic violence. Based on their findings, the group proposed using popular multimedia outlets—such as Tumblr, Facebook, and Reddit—video chats, and community-service opportunities in order to reach more students across college campuses.
In addition to presenting at the symposium, the students networked with professionals from various local outreach programs, including Women in Distress of Broward County, which has a partnership with FAU. Moving forward, the students plan to compose an article detailing their research on community-based activism and service learning.
Additional panel members included moderator Lilleth Trewick, instructor at FAU, and Laura Finley, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology and criminology at Barry University. FAU’s Comparative Studies Student Association hosted the multidisciplinary symposium.
