MELBOURNE, Fla. – Officials from the Sunshine State Conference announced on Monday that Nova Southeastern freshman Natalie Espinal has been named SSC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.
This is Espinal’s first career award and the second for NSU this season.
At just 17 years old, Espinal takes Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades for her performance in Nova Southeastern’s two wins last week. The Tegucigalpa, Honduras native won all of her singles and doubles matches vs. No. 25 Wayne State University and against NAIA No. 2 Keiser University, while playing up one level in first-flight singles. Her second win of the week was key for the Sharks, as her rally in tiebreakers against NAIA No. 5 Keiser’s Daniela Farfan for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 win tied the score on a Sharks comeback to a 4-3 victory.
Playing at No. 2 doubles with Sarah Wardenburg, Espinal was perfect on the week and her pair delivered the team doubles win at Keiser with a 7-6 victory over the NAIA’s ninth-ranked pair.
Riding a 13-match win streak and ranked No. 7 in the nation ahead of a possible bump in the March 20 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, NSU will take on Sonoma State out of California on Thursday at the NSU Tennis Complex at noon.
