Student researchers highlighted their hands-on approach to constructing a community-based literacy center at a local at-risk educational center in Ft Lauderdale. In their poster titled “Collaborative Mentoring in Creating a Community Based Literacy Center,” they discussed the significance of cultivating relationships with high school students at an at-risk learning center, and explained the benefits of relying on the values of reciprocity and empathy. Students are all interns under the guidance of Juliette Kitchens, Ph.D., and Kelly Concannon, Ph.D., professors of WRIT 4950 (“Internship in Writing,”) which is housed in the Department of Writing and Communication.
