FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Marine research has been one of the foundations of Nova Southeastern University (NSU.) Dating back to the 1960s, NSU has been deeply involved in learning about the world’s oceans and the myriad of creatures who live there. One of the most beloved creatures found on our reefs are sea turtles – and Florida is home to several species, many of which are considered endangered.

Like other native animals, sea turtles share the beach with Floridians living along the coastline. Realizing that we need to do whatever we can to help ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures, Broward County created the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program. Since its inception more than 25 years ago, the county has worked with NSU via a public/private partnership to operate the program as part of ongoing oceanographic research, a cornerstone of the university’s marine sciences program at the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography.

To help raise funds for the program, a “Party with a Purpose” event has been scheduled. The fundraiser is set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 17th at Mickey Byrnes Irish Pub, 1921 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. The event is open to the entire South Florida community.

The cost is $10 per ticket – they can be purchased before the event (with the full $10 going toward the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program) or at the door, with 50% of the cost of those tickets benefitting the program. Along with food and drinks, the event features silent auction and raffle prizes – again, with 50% of the auction proceeds benefiting the sea turtle program.
