2013 Diversity Summit

Diversity Summit 2013In a time of major political, economic and social changes, it has never been more important that individuals speak out when they see injustices and step up to take the lead in their communities.  From wrongful convictions to housing discrimination, school-based bullying to sex trafficking, there remains much work to be done in South Florida. The South Florida Diversity Alliance’s 6th annual Diversity Summit encourages individuals and communities to come together to explore current issues impacting our communities; to discuss solutions to these social issues; and to build on our strengths to become more inclusive and, as a result, more united. Thus, individuals are encouraged to not only identify and problematize social injustices, but to use this space in order to create opportunities of and for solidarity. The summit is suitable for both youth and adult populations, with a. sessions shorter (50 minutes) and afternoon sessions longer (75 minutes).

Students, staff, educators, administrators, alumni, and other members of the diverse South Florida community are invited to present interactive workshops and individual and panel presentations, film viewings and discussions, and performances. Presentations should challenge participants to dialogue openly about issues of diversity that are perhaps still off limits in many segments of society. Preference will be given to proposals that build participants’ capacity to engage with diverse populations and stress the interconnectedness of issues related to diversity, difference, and power. We encourage presenters to use multiple media and to bring handouts or other relevant materials.

Presentation topics include but are not limited to the following and should complicate issues of identities in significant ways:

  • Strategies for building diverse and activist communities;
  • Politics and Education for social change;
  • Peace education/activism;
  • Current issues, such as the Trayvon Martin case, Stand Your Ground laws, Florida’s Timely Justice Act, and more.

As well as workshops related to identity and inclusion in regard to:

  • Race/Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Class/Caste
  • Religion
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Age
  • Disability

Please send inquiries, 200-500-word proposals, and a 50-word bio to sfda@nova.edu. Proposals should include a description of how presenters will engage attendees in active participation and learning. Proposals should also describe if the proposed workshop is suitable to only one time slot and/or audience, or if the presenter(s) are only available at specific times during the day. Notification of acceptance and schedule of sessions will be sent via email by Friday, October 11, 2013 at 5:00 pm.
